Guest Post: How To Be A Better Blog Commenter

Hello lovelies. Today, as promised, I have a guest post for you. This post is very apt at the moment since we are in the midst of the blog love challenge, so please enjoy :)

How to be a better blog commenter.

Hello Eeep! I’m a blogger readers!  My name is Sarah and I blog over at Desirous of Everything.  I am currently hosting a comment challenge over at my blog (stop by and check it out!) and thought this could be the perfect opportunity to talk about the real deal with commenting!

If you’re a blogger, I’m sure you would agree that a comment on your blog makes your day.  But what are you like as a commenter yourself?  How often do you comment?  I find that commenting often on the blogs I read is not as easy as I think it would be.  So I’d like to talk about some commenting misconceptions that I know I’m guilty of.

1. You’re expecting too much from yourself. Have you ever been on youtube?  Are any of those comments witty?  Or do they even make sense?  Do you know how to spell words, use spell check and have a basic grasp of grammar?  Then pat yourself on the back, because that’s all you need to be an amazing commenter.  Seriously.

2.You’re over analyzing.  You’ve probably heard this before: the more you comment the more comments you’ll get on your own blog then the more followers you’ll have and then before you know it you are a famous blogging superstar who has taken over the internet!!  Look, some of that last sentence may be true, but what about commenting just to get into the conversation.  Make friends, relax and bit.  All that other stuff will come when it comes, if it comes.  I know that for the best bloggers out there, that stuff doesn’t even matter that much.  Comment because you care and want to, and maybe you’ll get a new follower or comment back yourself, maybe you won’t.  No one ever became famous over a comment they left on someone else’s blog.

3. You’re forgetting that it’s a blog post is not an article. People have comments available on their blogs because they want to start a conversation.  They want to know what you think and your opinion, or else they wouldn’t make comments available.  Writing a comment isn’t the same as writing a letter to the editor of a magazine or newspaper.  It’s more casual than that.  Try thinking of it this way: how would you respond to a conversation that you had with that blogger rather than an article that they just wrote?

And that’s really all there is to it!  So if you’d like to work on experiencing the joys of commenting, think about signing up for my Comment Love Challenge and see what kind of commenting changes you can make for yourself.

  1. So true, Sarah! I often get hung up on thinking of something genius to say. Also, sometimes CAPTCHAs are beyond my reading capabilities. Like a childproof cap…that I just can’t open. But I digress! Love your post. xo

  2. I’ve started to loosen up about commenting since starting to blog myself because I now know how nice it is to recieve any comments- even with typos or if it’s just a quick “me too”! It’s easiest for me to comment on the blogs that I read all the time of course, but lately even if I read something I like and I’m new to the blog I’ll let the person know quickly… just ’cause it’s a nice thing to do.

  3. Great tips, Sarah! I agree with Maeg, sometimes I get caught up in trying to think of the perfect thing to say. But really, saying anything, as long as its genuine, is enough!

  4. I’m guilty of trying to think of something worthwhile to say, then I go away to think about it for a while and forget all about it! *hangs head in shame* You are right though, a simple I liked your post etc can be more than enough to start a convo and make friends!
