Oh Christmas Lights

I love Coldplay’s Christmas song Christmas Lights, and it’s one of the few new ones that actually make me feel as Christmassy as the old hits. So today I thought I’d do a tribute… by looking at some of the best (and worst) Christmas lights on the internet.

I think that Christmas decorations in general tend to fall into certain categories, and lights are absolutely no exception. So without further ado, let’s have a look at five of the most frequently seen Christmas light categories.

1. Classy and tasteful:
Ok, I’m going to be boring here and admit that I really do like classy Christmas lights. They say “hey we love Christmas in this household, but we’re not going to go crazy”. Classy Christmas lights don’t cover the sophisticated person’s house, they serve to accentuate it. They are Christmas lights for people who are a bit obsessive compulsive, like me.

2. Figurines:
I’m not talking figurines like the snowman above, I’m talking about full on fibreglass or plastic figurines. Snowmen, reindeer, santa’s, elves, Christmas words – you name it, someone will have it. Sometimes even something non-Christmassy creeps in.

3. Ridiculously elaborate and downright impressive:
These are the kind of houses that you can see from half a mile down the road, such is the extent of their Christmas glare. Occasionally, bigger doesn’t always mean better, and in having an abundance of Christmas lights you are risking looking gaudy or tacky. But some houses just manage to pull it off superbly.

4. The poor effort:
The poor effort normally occurs when someone decides they want to go public with their Christmas decorations and put some outside of their house. However, they don’t go the whole hog as it were, and end up with a lone figurine, or a sad string of fairy lights.

5. Christmassy pets:
Well, I wasn’t aware that this was a trend, but in searching for images to use for this post, I found a lot of pets covered in Christmas lights. So I thought I must share them with you.

Anyway, I must go because it’s the Strictly Come Dancing final and I need to give it my full attention. Until tomorrow mes amis!
